Description

Bambu Lab AMS — Multi-Colour Printing Made Simple

The Bambu Lab AMS (Automatic Material System) is the original multi-colour and multi-material add-on for Bambu Lab printers. Load up to 4 filament spools, and the AMS automatically feeds the right filament for each colour or material change during your print — no manual swapping, no pausing, no babysitting.

Connect up to 4 AMS units for a maximum of 16 filament options, enabling complex multi-colour designs, soluble support material workflows, and multi-material combinations in a single print.

How It Works

The AMS sits on top of or beside your Bambu Lab printer and feeds filament through a PTFE tube to the printer’s extruder. When a colour or material change is needed mid-print, the AMS retracts the current filament, loads the next one, purges the transition, and resumes printing — all automatically. The entire process takes seconds per change.

RFID Filament Recognition

Bambu Lab filament spools include an RFID chip that the AMS reads automatically. When you load a spool, the printer recognises the material type, colour, and optimal settings — no manual configuration needed. Third-party filaments without RFID work perfectly but require manual material selection in Bambu Studio.

What Can You Do with the AMS?

Multi-Colour Printing

Print models in up to 4 colours per AMS unit (16 with four units). Logos, text, patterns, and complex multi-colour designs print automatically without manual filament swaps.

Soluble Supports

Load PVA or BVOH soluble support material alongside your main filament. The AMS prints supports in dissolvable material and the main part in your chosen filament — drop the finished print in water and the supports dissolve completely, leaving clean overhangs and internal geometry.

Auto Filament Backup

Load the same filament in multiple AMS slots. When one spool runs out, the AMS automatically switches to the next — no more failed prints from empty spools during long unattended jobs.

AMS vs AMS 2 Pro — Which to Choose

AMS (This Product)

The original multi-material system. Reliable 4-spool feeding with RFID recognition. No built-in filament drying. Lower price point.

AMS 2 Pro

Adds built-in 65°C filament drying, airtight sealed storage, 60% faster brushless servo feeding, 20–30% less purge waste, tool-free maintenance, and ceramic filament inlets. Higher price point.

Choose the original AMS for straightforward multi-colour printing at a lower cost. Choose the AMS 2 Pro if filament drying, faster feeding, and reduced waste are worth the premium.

Compatibility

Bambu Lab X1 Carbon (X1C)
Bambu Lab P1S
Bambu Lab P1P
Bambu Lab A1 (uses AMS Lite — see note below)
Bambu Lab A1 Mini (uses AMS Lite — see note below)

Note: The A1 and A1 Mini use the AMS Lite, not the standard AMS. The standard AMS is compatible with the X1C, P1S, and P1P.

Supported Materials

PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PET, PA, PC, PVA, BVOH, PP, POM, HIPS, Bambu PLA-CF, Bambu PAHT-CF, Bambu PETG-CF, Support for PLA/PETG, and TPU for AMS.

What’s in the Box
