Description

Basic Nylon PA6-CF — Carbon Fibre Reinforced Nylon at a Budget Price

Basic Nylon PA6-CF combines standard PA6’s toughness, heat resistance, and chemical resistance with approximately 15% chopped carbon fibre reinforcement — delivering meaningfully higher strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability while retaining nylon’s fatigue resistance. If you need a functional part that combines structural rigidity with nylon’s ability to absorb repeated stress cycles, PA6-CF is the material to reach for.

Why PA6-CF Over Standard PA6?

Standard PA6 is flexible and tough, but that flexibility can be a limitation in load-bearing structural parts that need to hold their shape under stress. Adding 15% carbon fibre significantly increases stiffness, tensile strength, and dimensional stability, while also producing a distinctive matte black finish that hides layer lines well. The trade-off is a more abrasive filament that requires a hardened nozzle.

Same Nylon Strengths, Structural Rigidity

PA6-CF retains PA6’s core advantages — resistance to oils, fuels, and greases, and the ability to flex and absorb impact without cracking under repeated cyclic stress. The carbon fibre reinforcement adds the stiffness and strength needed for genuinely structural applications, producing a material that competes with engineering-grade thermoplastics used in industrial settings.

Nozzle Considerations

The 15% carbon fibre content is highly abrasive and will wear a standard brass nozzle quickly. A hardened steel nozzle is required for reliable use. A 0.6mm nozzle is recommended over 0.4mm to reduce clogging risk on longer prints — the carbon fibre particles can accumulate in smaller nozzle bores over time.

Moisture — Still a Priority

Like all PA6 variants, PA6-CF is highly hygroscopic. Thorough drying before every printing session is essential for good results — wet nylon produces brittle, bubbling prints with poor layer adhesion regardless of reinforcement.

Print Settings

Nozzle temperature: 260–300°C — requires an all-metal hotend rated for these temperatures
Bed temperature: 100–120°C — PA-specific adhesive or garolite surface recommended
Print speed: 50–200 mm/s
Enclosure: recommended — reduces warping on larger parts
Nozzle: hardened steel required — 0.6mm recommended for reliability
Drying: 75–100°C for 6+ hours before every print session
Spool: cardboard — AMS compatible

Applications

Structural brackets, mounts, and load-bearing components, drone frames and RC chassis parts requiring stiffness with impact tolerance, jigs, fixtures, and tooling in workshop or manufacturing environments, functional prototypes simulating engineering-grade thermoplastic performance, components exposed to oils, fuels, and greases needing structural rigidity, any application where nylon’s fatigue resistance needs to be paired with genuine stiffness.

PA6-CF vs PA6-GF — Which Reinforcement to Choose

PA6-CF (Carbon Fibre)

Higher strength and stiffness. Distinctive matte black finish. Better vibration damping. Best for maximum structural performance.

PA6-GF (Glass Fibre)

Good stiffness improvement with somewhat more impact tolerance than CF in some applications. Available in colours beyond black. Best when a lighter-duty stiffness boost is sufficient.

Both require hardened nozzles and offer meaningful upgrades over standard PA6 for structural applications — carbon fibre generally delivers the higher strength ceiling.

PA6-CF vs PA12-CF
