Basic Nylon PA6 — Engineering Strength at a Budget Price
Basic Nylon PA6 delivers the toughness, heat resistance, and chemical resistance that nylon is known for, without the premium price tag of specialty PA blends. PA6 is one of the most widely used engineering plastics in industry — chosen for its fatigue resistance, wear resistance, and ability to handle mechanical stress that would crack more brittle materials.
If you need functional parts that flex under load rather than snapping, resist oils and greases in mechanical environments, and hold up to repeated stress cycles, PA6 is the material to reach for.
Why Nylon PA6?
Nylon combines high tensile strength with genuine flexibility and fatigue resistance — properties that PLA, PETG, and even ABS can’t match. Where rigid filaments crack under repeated flexing or sudden shock, PA6 absorbs the stress and keeps working. This makes it the material of choice for gears, hinges, snap-fit assemblies, and any mechanical part subject to cyclic loading.
Oil & Grease Resistant
PA6’s chemical resistance to oils, fuels, and greases makes it well suited to mechanical and automotive applications — components that operate in or around lubricated machinery, engine bays, and workshop environments where petroleum-based products are common.
Moisture — The One Thing to Manage
Nylon is highly hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air aggressively, more than almost any other common filament. Wet PA6 prints poorly: brittle parts, bubbling, poor layer adhesion, and inconsistent extrusion. Thorough drying before every print session isn’t optional with nylon — it’s essential for getting the mechanical performance the material is capable of.
Print Settings
Nozzle temperature: 260–300°C — requires an all-metal hotend rated for these temperatures
Bed temperature: 100–120°C — PA-specific adhesive or garolite surface recommended
Print speed: 50–200 mm/s
Enclosure: recommended — reduces warping on larger parts
Drying: 75–100°C for 6+ hours before every print session — critical for PA6
Spool: cardboard — AMS compatible
Applications
Functional gears, bushings, and bearings, snap-fit assemblies and living hinges subject to repeated flexing, mechanical brackets and fixtures in workshop or automotive environments, parts exposed to oils, greases, and fuels, replacement components for tools and machinery, any application needing fatigue resistance under cyclic mechanical stress.
Basic Nylon PA6 vs Reinforced Nylon
Basic PA6 offers strong baseline mechanical properties at an accessible price. For applications needing maximum stiffness, reduced warping, or higher heat deflection, glass fibre or carbon fibre reinforced nylon (PA-GF, PA-CF) adds further performance — at a higher cost and with the abrasive wear considerations that come with fibre fillers. Basic PA6 is the right starting point for most functional nylon applications; step up to reinforced variants when you need the extra stiffness or dimensional stability.
