Description

ASA-GF15 — Glass Fibre Reinforced ASA for Outdoor & Engineering Applications

ASA-GF15 combines standard ASA’s excellent UV resistance and weatherability with 15% chopped glass fibre reinforcement for increased stiffness, dimensional stability, and heat resistance. Where standard ASA already handles outdoor exposure without yellowing or degrading, ASA-GF15 goes further — adding the rigidity needed for structural outdoor parts, automotive components, and functional prints that need to hold their shape under load and heat.

Why ASA-GF Over Standard ASA?

ASA is already the go-to choice for outdoor parts thanks to its UV stability — unlike ABS, it doesn’t yellow, crack, or weaken under sunlight exposure. Adding 15% glass fibre builds on this foundation with meaningfully higher stiffness and reduced warping during printing, better dimensional stability on large or flat parts, and improved heat deflection temperature — parts hold their shape at higher ambient temperatures than standard ASA.

The trade-off is a more abrasive filament requiring a hardened nozzle, and a slightly more involved print setup with enclosure and bed prep considerations.

UV & Weather Resistance

ASA-GF15 maintains colour and structural integrity through prolonged outdoor exposure — sun, rain, and temperature swings. Where PETG and ABS-based materials degrade and discolour outdoors over months, ASA-based filaments are formulated specifically to resist this. Combined with the added stiffness of glass fibre, ASA-GF15 is well suited to permanent outdoor installations that need to look good and perform for years.

Heat Resistance

Standard ASA has a heat deflection temperature around 95–100°C. ASA-GF15’s glass fibre reinforcement maintains or improves on this, giving parts genuine resistance to warm environments — engine bays, sun-exposed enclosures, and outdoor fixtures that see elevated ambient temperatures without softening or deforming.

Print Settings

Nozzle temperature: 240–260°C
Bed temperature: 100–110°C (glass, PEI, or PC film build surface)
Enclosure: strongly recommended — 60–80°C chamber temperature reduces warping significantly
Retraction: 1–5mm at 1800–3600 mm/min
Nozzle: hardened steel required — 0.6mm or larger recommended, especially at higher speeds, to reduce clogging from the abrasive glass fibre content
Drying: 70–80°C for 4–6 hours before printing, and after any extended storage

AMS / Automatic Feed Systems

Glass fibre reinforcement makes the filament more brittle than standard ASA. It can snap inside AMS-style feed paths, leading to jams or failed prints. A direct-drive extruder or manual loading is recommended over automatic multi-material systems for the most reliable results.

Storage

ASA-GF15 absorbs moisture readily. Keep the spool sealed in an airtight container with desiccant when not in use, and dry before every printing session if the filament has been exposed to open air for an extended period.

Applications

Outdoor fixtures — mailboxes, signage, garden fittings, umbrella and furniture hardware
Automotive components — interior/exterior trim, vents, handles, instrument panel parts
Industrial equipment components requiring heat resistance
Architectural fittings and marine equipment exposed to prolonged weathering
Any functional outdoor part that needs more rigidity than standard ASA provides

Safety Note

ASA-based filaments can emit fumes during printing — print in a well-ventilated area or enclosed/filtered system. Glass fibre composites should not be sanded or machined without appropriate respiratory protection and eye protection, as fine glass particulate is a respiratory and skin irritant.
