Description
Basic Wood Infused PLA — Real Wood Particles, Real Wood Look
Basic Wood PLA contains approximately 15% real wood particles blended into a PLA base, producing prints with a natural matte finish that looks and feels like wood. The surface has a warm, organic texture with visible wood grain characteristics that standard PLA can’t replicate — and it smells like freshly cut wood during printing.
At $25.99 per KG on a cardboard spool, it’s an affordable entry into composite wood filament for decorative pieces, display models, and anything where you want a natural, earthy aesthetic.
Adjustable Wood Grain Effect
The appearance of wood PLA changes with nozzle temperature. Lower temperatures (190–200°C) produce a lighter, more uniform colour. Higher temperatures (210–220°C) darken the wood particles and create more contrast, simulating a deeper wood grain effect. By varying temperature between layers or across a print, you can create realistic grain patterns and colour gradients that make each print unique.
Post-Processing Like Real Wood
One of the best features of wood PLA is that it responds to finishing techniques just like real wood. Sand it smooth with standard sandpaper, stain it with wood stain for a richer tone, varnish or lacquer it for a polished finish, and paint or weather it for aged and rustic effects. A sanded and stained wood PLA print is nearly indistinguishable from a carved wooden object.
Important: Dry Before Printing
Wood PLA is significantly more hygroscopic than standard PLA — the wood particles absorb moisture aggressively. Printing with wet wood filament causes bubbling, popping, rough surfaces, and stringing. Dry thoroughly at 50°C for 6+ hours before every printing session, and store in a vacuum-sealed bag with desiccant between uses.
This is not optional. Undried wood filament will produce poor results regardless of your print settings.
Nozzle Considerations
The wood particles can accumulate inside the nozzle over time, particularly with smaller nozzle sizes. A 0.4 mm nozzle works but may experience occasional partial clogs on longer prints. A 0.6 mm nozzle significantly reduces clogging risk and is recommended for large or long-duration wood PLA prints. Avoid 0.2 mm nozzles — the wood particles will clog them.
A standard brass nozzle is fine — wood particles are not abrasive like carbon fibre.
