PLA is the easiest starting point for most people — it prints at a low temperature, warps minimally, and doesn’t need a heated enclosure. If your project needs more strength or heat resistance, PETG is the next step up while still being straightforward to print.
PLA is the easiest to print and best for models, prototypes, and decorative prints. PETG adds strength and impact resistance for functional parts. ABS and ASA are tougher, more heat-resistant engineering filaments, with ASA also offering excellent UV resistance for outdoor use — both need a heated enclosure for reliable results.

PLA, PETG, and TPU print reliably on open-frame printers. ABS, ASA, nylon, and glass or carbon-fibre reinforced materials generally need an enclosure to prevent warping and layer splitting, since they rely on a stable, warm ambient temperature to print well.
Most filaments are hygroscopic to some degree, but nylon, TPU, PETG, and PC are especially moisture-sensitive and benefit from drying before use. PLA and ABS are more forgiving, but drying is still worthwhile if a spool has been open for an extended period in a humid environment.

Standard filaments like PLA, PETG, ABS, and ASA print fine through a standard brass nozzle. Abrasive filaments containing carbon fibre or glass fibre require a hardened steel nozzle, as the fibres will quickly wear down a standard brass nozzle.
